Osumilite is a rare silicate mineral containing potassium, iron, magnesium, and aluminium. It belongs to the milarite-osumilite group. It occurs as small hexagonal crystals, usually blue, gray, brown, or black in color. The mineral is primarily a collector and research mineral and wouldn’t be found as a gemstone in your typical jewelry store.

Quick Answer:

Osumilite is a cyclosilicate mineral with the chemical formula (K, Na)(Fe, Mg)₂(Al, Fe)₃(Si, Al)₁₂O₃₀. Its hardness ranges from 5 to 6. The mineral was first discovered in volcanic rocks near Osumi, Kagoshima, Japan.

Like many original style gemstones, cuttable osumilite gem-quality stone is almost never available. There is no set price. Check lab for identification before paying for faceted stone.

What Is Osumilite Mineral?

Osumilite is a silicate, a rare find. Most of us never even see it. It creates small grains and minuscule crystals. It is very rare, which makes it a collector’s item.

Osumilite’s Chemical Composition and Formula:

Its acceptable chemical formula is (K,Na)(Fe,Mg)₂(Al,Fe)₃(Si,Al)₁₂O₃₀. The brackets matter. They show that some elements can swap places. So two specimens can have slightly different chemistry.

The structure is built from double rings of silicon-oxygen units. Each double ring contains the repeating unit Si₁₂O₃₀.  This ring structure is the reason osumilite is classified as a cyclosilicate.

Color, Luster and Crystal Appearance:

Occurs as a blue, gray, brown or black material. It is translucent. Crystal size is very small, usually tabular or hexagonal in form.  Often specimens that are only millimeters across are examined with a hand lens or scope.

Why Osumilite Is Considered Uncommon?

It forms only in special geological settings. Such settings generally need high temperature and the right rock chemistry. Crystals are small even when they occur. Very large,  pristine bits are exceptionally rare. Its ring structure is the true cause of its rarity.

Is Osumilite a Gemstone or a Collector Mineral?

But Osumilite is primarily a collector mineral. It is a gemstone in only a very limited sense. Here’s the distinction.

Documented Gem-Quality Material:

I have not found a reliable, documented source of gem-quality osumilite. Some faceted stones are sold under the name. But that does not prove they are real osumilite.

For example, one listing I found titles a 1.15 ct fancy-cut stone with two mineral names joined together. A label like that tells a buyer very little. It needs a lab report.

Why Most Specimens Are Valued for Mineralogical Interest?

Most specimens are thumbnail to miniature specimens of rock, sometimes with small crystals. They are purchased for locality, rarity and scientific interest.

They are not bought for sparkle. That is why buyers should think about specimen quality, not carat price.

Osumilite Mineral Properties:

This section addresses the numbers.  All numbers are derived from standard mineral references (Mindat,  the Handbook of Mineralogy, etc.).

Hardness on the Mohs Scale:

Osumilite has a hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs. That is medium. It is a softer material than quartz. Dust and sand can scratch and abrade it over time.

Specific Gravity and Density:

SG is 2.62-2.64, osumilite-(Mg) is 2.63 and osumilite-(Fe) is 2.64. That is near quartz and some other silicates. So SG alone cannot determine any identities.

Refractive Indices and Optical Characteristics:

Seem about 1.545-1.547 (ω) and 1.549-1.551 (ε). Very near, about 0.004 difference. Values this close to other silicates can overlap. A basic refractometer can mislead a buyer. A lab uses more methods.

Crystal System and Crystal Structure:

Osumilite is hexagonal in structure. The space group is P6/mcc. It is the double-ring structure of this mineral that makes it what it is.

Cleavage, Fracture and Durability:

I don’t have a full set of cleavage data on osumilite. I would not make things up. For the consumer, the bottom line is simple: ‘mediocre hardness and relatively tiny crystal size’ mean that it won’t take much of a beating. Treat all items you buy with the care you would have taken with a delicate object.

Compositional Variation:

Iron and magnesium can replace each other. That is why the group has several named members. I explain this below.

What Are the Uses of Osumilite?

Osumilite has few practical uses. I say this clearly because many pages exaggerate.

Uses in Mineralogical Research:

Uses of Osumilite Osumilite is important because of its application to rocks. Mineralogists apply it to study the temperature and chemistry of the rocks in which it forms.

It can also happen in ultrahigh-temperature rocks.  Scientists looked at pseudomorphs in southern Madagascar.

Importance in Understanding Metamorphic and Igneous Rocks:

It’s present in volcanic and high-temperature metamorphic rocks. Such features can be diagnostic. Geologists detect it, they know something about the conditions in that rock.

Osumilite Mineral as a Collector Mineral:

Collectors buy it for locality and rarity. A specimen from the type area in Japan has more interest than a random piece.

Can Osumilite mineral Be Cut, Polished or Used in Jewelry?

Theoretically, yes – if you’re lucky enough to get a clean match. Practically – Almost never. Crystals are too small. Clean cuttable pieces are rare. I do not know of an established osumilite jewelry trade.

Limitations Affecting Commercial and Decorative Use:

  • Very small crystal size
  • Moderate hardness
  • Limited supply
  • Difficult identification
  • No established market

There are no proven industrial uses I can cite. I will not claim any.

Where Is Osumilite Found?

Osumilite mineral forms in rocks that formed or changed at high temperature.

Geological Environments:

It is found in:

  • Volcanic rocks such as rhyolite and obsidian-bearing flows
  • Some thermally metamorphosed rocks
  • Ultrahigh-temperature rocks

Documented Localities and Notable Specimens:

Mindat and other references list these localities:

  • Osumi and Kagoshima, Japan (type area)
  • Yamanashi and Gifu, Japan
  • Obsidian Cliffs and McKenzie Pass, Oregon, USA
  • Sardinia, Italy (Funtanafigu quarry, Marrubiu)
  • Eifel district, Germany
  • Madagascar (Mahaly area, as pseudomorphs)
  • Namaqualand, South Africa
  • Tieveragh, Antrim, Northern Ireland (type locality for osumilite-(Mg))

Most dealer specimens I found came from Japan and Sardinia.

How Temperature, Pressure and Rock Composition Matter?

Osumilite mineral loves heat. Chemistry is of the utmost importance to: Potassium, aluminium, iron and magnesium in the right ratio. If you aren’t getting enough of any of them in the original rock, then you won’t get the mineral!

What Osumilite Reveals About Geological History?

If the geologist finds any osumilite mineral, they will understand the kind of temperatures the rock has been through. The scientist is then able to construct the overall pattern of either a volcano or far underground crust realm.

What Is the Osumilite Mineral Group?

Osumilite belongs to the milarite-osumilite group of cyclosilicates. The group is built on double-ring structures.

The Defining Characteristics of the Osumilite Group

Members share the same basic ring framework. They differ in which elements fill certain positions.

How Group Members Differ Chemically:

The group includes:

  • Osumilite (the original name and general species)
  • Osumilite-(Mg) with more magnesium than iron
  • Osumilite-(Fe) with more iron than magnesium
  • Klöchite, a zinc-bearing member with the formula K□₂(Fe²⁺Fe³⁺)Zn₃[Si₁₂O₃₀]

Osumilite Mineral vs. Osumilite-(Mg):

Osumilite-(Mg) is the magnesium-dominant species. Webmineral states the formula for Osumilite-(Mg) is (K, Na)(Mg, Fe)₂(Al, Fe)₃(Si, Al)₁₂O₃₀ and specific gravity of 2.63.

Many dealer specimens are likely to be osumilite-(Mg). Do not treat them as interchangeable. The seller should say which one it is.

Osumilite Mineral vs. Cordierite:

The primary confusion among buyers concerns osumilite mineral, which was initially mistaken for cordierite due to their similar colors. Cordierite is a distinct mineral, with the chemical formula (Mg, Fe)₂Al₃(AlSi₅O₁₈).  It is typically harder, with a hardness between 7 and 7.5, and often displays pronounced pleochroism.

Cordierite figures here come from general gemological references, not from the osumilite mineral sources.

How Classification and Nomenclature Work?

The International Mineralogical Association (IMA) determines the naming of a mineral species. New names are approved. The suffix – (Mg) or – (Fe) will denote the dominant element.

What Does Osumilite Crystal Mean?

I will keep this short and honest, as you asked.

Scientific Meaning of the Name:

The mineral’s name is derived from Osumi, the region in Japan,  Kagoshima where it was originally discovered. It’s not named for spiritual reasons.

Symbolic Interpretations:

I found no documented traditional or cultural meaning for osumilite. I will not invent one. Some modern crystal sellers attach meanings to almost every stone. Such are considered as modern marketing, not tradition.

Are Osumilite Healing Properties Scientifically Established?

No. There isn’t any science to support that osumilite can cure anything or treat anything.

Chakra and Birthstone Connections:

Osumilite mineral is not a traditional birthstone. I could not find a reliable, documented chakra tradition for it either. If you see one online, treat it as someone’s personal belief.

Facts vs. Beliefs:

The facts are the formula, structure, hardness, and localities. Everything else is faith. Keep them separate.

How to Identify and Evaluate Osumilite?

Do not judge a stone only by its color or its good look, it should be considered a big mistake.

Visual Characteristics and Their Limitations:

Identifying stones that look alike Blue-gray translucent stones look similar. Cordierite, quartz and other silicates can resemble one another. You need to be able to verify the identity of the stone by some other means.

What Experienced Buyers Check?

I look at the full picture before I trust a stone:

  • Luster
  • Specific gravity
  • Refractive index
  • Clarity and natural inclusions
  • Cleavage or imperfections
  • Mohs hardness
  • Treatment status
  • Ethical origin
  • Price compared with other listings
  • Certification if the stone is cut

Laboratory Methods for Confirming Identity:

A laboratory can use:

  • X-ray diffraction
  • Raman spectroscopy
  • Analysis of the chemical composition ( microprobe or EDS)
  • Optical characterization

Some are just a tiny chip or, in some cases,  not even that. If you have a faceted stone,  ask GIA, IGS or SSEF if they will do it.

Factors Affecting Collector Value:

Locality:

A known locality such as Japan or Sardinia adds confidence.

Crystal Quality:

Eye-clean Crystal is sold for a premium than crushed Crystal grains.

Size and Contrast:

Larger stones with a clear matrix get special focus

Condition:

When the stone gets damaged or gets scratches the value of it lowers.

Documentation:

A label with locality and identification helps a lot.

Why a Reliable Market Price Is Hard to Establish?

Rare items are bought rarely. They are one of a kind. No price list. Sellers each choose what to charge.

Osumilite Mineral Price and Value:

You wanted me to specify the market structure today. I have checked the public listings on October 16, 2026.

These are ASKING prices, not sale prices. They don’t indicate what things actually sold for.

Listings I Found:

Osumilite-(Mg), Gifu, Japan, thumbnail specimenThumbnail$70
Osumilite-(Mg), Hida, Gifu, JapanSpecimen$85 or best offer
Osumilite, Sardinia (eBay seller)595 ct, 80 × 46 × 29 mm$133.45 (listed as reduced from $190.64)
Osumilite, Sardinia (Etsy seller)595 ct$462.38
Osumilite, Oregon (mineral dealer)Specimen$25
Osumilite, Oregon (same dealer)4.0 × 2.7 × 2.6 cm$36
Osumilite, Italy, old collection (European dealer)Specimen€10
Fancy-cut stone with a mixed name1.15 ct, 6.5 × 6.5 × 4.3 mm$25

What the Market Shows?

Specimens ran from about €10 to about $460 in the listings I found. Most thumbnail and miniature pieces sat between $25 and $90.

Look at the Sardinia piece. Two sellers listed what looks like the same type of 595 ct specimen at $133.45 and $462.38. That gap is more than three times. It shows why one listing is not proof of value.

I cannot give a price per carat. Specimens are not sold that way. And I found no reliable faceted-osumilite market to build one from.

Size and Price:

Yes, Size does matter!  For example a large,  gem quality crystal cluster might be worth hundreds of dollars while the size of a thumbnail may be several dollars. Price also depends on location and quality.

Is Osumilite an Investment?

No. I see no reliable evidence that osumilite holds or grows in value. The market is tiny and prices are scattered. Buy it because you like it and because you can verify it.

The Biggest Buyer Misconception:

What People Believe?

“A rare mineral must be an expensive, valuable gemstone.”

What Is Actually True?

Osumilite is rare as a mineral. But rare minerals often have a small market. Prices for common specimens can be low.

Why It Matters?

Sellers may use “rare” to charge more. Others sell common stones such as cordierite under the osumilite name. Buyers pay for a name and get something else.

My Expert View on Buying Osumilite Mineral:

I do not claim to have cut or worn osumilite. I rely on verified information, and I tell buyers the same.

What I can say from my work as a gemologist is this. I have rejected sellers who offered ordinary stones as faceted osumilite. Many of them did not know how to identify the stone. They had bought it from someone else and resold it.

My guidelines haven’t changed. https://www.ssef.ch/Avoid sellers not provided with a lab report from a credible laboratory – GIA, IGS or SSEF. Anyone who cannot tell you how they have identified the stone is likely a scammer. And always double-check that the seller is licensed in the country where they are based.

Osumilite Mineral and Cordierite Mix-Ups:

Sometimes you can buy osumilite mineral from dishonest sellers, who may not know the difference.

Ask three questions:

  1. How was this identified?
  2. Is there a lab report?
  3. What is its locality?

If the answers are vague, walk away.

How to Find Osumilite: Rockhound Notes

Finding osumilite is hard. Usually, crystals are in tiny amounts and sit in hard rock.

Where to Look?

Look in volcanic rocks at known localities. Mindat lists many. Rockhounds should use hand lens and should also look inside small cavities.

Before You Go:

Many sites are on private or protected land.  Be sure to ask first. This requires having all the necessary permission and paperwork before arriving at any site you are planning to visit, says Mindat.

Expectations:

You’re likely to see no, or only small,  grains, not gem crystals. Some features still require a lab or a skilled mineralogist to determine.

Is Osumilite Safe and How Should You Care for It?

I’m not aware of any risk from osumilite mineral during normal handling. But I have no complete safety study. Avoid rough handling of the specimens and breathing dust during crushing or cutting rock.

Care:

  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth
  • If required, try a soft brush and a little water
  • Steer clear of harsh chemicals
  • Don’t use ultrasonic and steam cleaning
  • Keep it in a padded box, separate from harder minerals.

Buyer Checklist

  1. You should ask for the stone’s exact name osumilite, osumilite-(Mg) or osumilite-(Fe).
  2. Investigate about its locality.
  3. For faceted stones, ask for a lab report.
  4. Compare hardness, SG and luster against known values.
  5. Look for damage and repairs.
  6. Compare price with several listings.
  7. Check the seller’s reputation.
  8. Do not buy on color alone.
  9. Do not treat it as an investment.
